We were actually parked in a suburb of Quebec City called Sainte Nicholas, just across the river on Hwy 20 Ouest. An easy access to the freeways and to "old town" Quebec. Saturday a.m., we were up early, I got one load of laundry done and then we headed off to be tourists for the day. Of course our first stop was to a RV dealer downt the road from where we were parked as Dale has spotted a Prevost Royale in their lot and he wanted to check it out!
Nice bus, nice colours and a lovely interior. It was a 1996 XL 45, Series 60 with 89,000 miles on it and asking $155,000.00. My, how prices have dropped!!!Anyone interested in a Prevost, this looks like a good buy.
Leaving there we once again went on our way. For the first little bit we drove through a lot of the areas, stopping here and there to admire the views and/or take pictures. To try and walk from the Plains of Abraham to the Citadel and points in between was not feasible, so we drove where ever possible and then, eventually, parked the car to visit small by ways and alley ways. Toured quite a bit of the older areas which was still crammed with tourists. Went into the Notre Dam Basillica and wow, is that ever a beautiful site to behold. Magificent structure and so majestic. One of the cornerstones stated that construction on the basillica started in 1608! Impressive history lesson as is most of the Quebec City area (We wanted to take a buggy ride to see some of the sites but we couldn't find the address!!)
After watching some street entertainment and visiting a few shops along the way, we decided to find the car and find a restaurant for a late lunch; away from the tourist areas as their prices were prohibitive! Besides now it was starting to sprinkle a little and we both are so fragile when it comes to rain!!!!!
When we got back on the river route (Blvd Champagne); we couldn't find another (inexpensive..eg: less than $20.00) parking spot so decided to cross the river and go for a drive south for a bit to see what was there. Again, lots of small towns and old barns. We did come across one of many "smoked meats" signs and decided to check it out. Turns out they are essentially pizza places that also sell smoked meat sandwiches, fries and beer! So, decided to try tgheir smoked meat special. Well, I haven't seen corned beef piled that high ever before; that plus a sack of potatoes in the form of french fries, cole slaw to die for and a pitcher of cold Sleeman's beer! And was it ever good, plus we brought a doggie bag home (the meat, not the beer!). This was around 3:00 in the afternoon so made a very late lunch and an early supper. No cooking tonight. The entertainment for the evening was doing laundry!
Sunday dawned a beautiful sunny day. Quite hot..went up to 34, but very little humidity so more bearable. Once we got the day going, Dale did a couple of small jobs on the bus and also oiled the lock on the gate. We had had difficulty opening it as it was quite rusted so thought we would repay their hospitality by getting it working a little easier. My entertainment while he was doing this was wiping window sills and washing the floor (and believe me, it really needed it) and generally cleaning up finger marks on all the mirrors and making the bus presentable again.
In the early afternoon we went "outside the gates" to the dump station and water hose so once again the necessary tanks are emptied and the water tanks are full. We left Sainte Nicholas then and headed to Sainte Claire. I had put the address into the Microsoft Streets & Trips program so we were following those directions, which, it turns out, took us on all the back roads and side roads where the bus was not meant to be!!! Beautiful drive tho through the back countryside, good for me, Dale was not so happy.
We again missed one turn, so had to unhook the car and back up, turn the corner and re-hook etc. The road signs were quite often difficult to find or see so easy to miss; plus the roads every few miles it seemed, changed names. So had to be on top of the computer map. Then we got to a "T" intersection with no signs for the road or the town. Fortunately, a young man was at the other stop sign so flagged him down (I'm getting rather good at this) and once again, through sign language and laughter, he got us to follow him to the Prevost factory. We were in Sainte-Claire only we didn't know it!
Parked the bus and took a drive around Sainte-Claire. Populations 3100. Not much to see or do. Picked up some fresh fruit/veg at a stand; checked out the local SAQ store (liquor store) the local METRO (supermarket) drove through a few streets and back to the bus. The reason that Prevost is in such a small town is that the original founder/builder lived there and started building busses in 1927..his original building and house is still in Sainte-Claire and the facility where we were parked was built in 1984.
Monday a.m., we were given a tour of the facility and my goodness, what a fabulous tour. Couldn't take any pictures but we were walked through every step of the building process to the finishing process and paint job/decal application. The quality control steps they have on the "shell" as it passes from work station to work station is impressive. If you are every over that way, well worth the tour.
Around 1:00 p.m. we left Sainte-Claire and started our drive to New Brunswick. This time we were given directions that had us on a much better road and shorter drive to the main freeway east (Hwy 20). It was about a 6 hour drive with a few stops in between to stretch our legs. Not much to see, your typical freeway drive from stop A to stop B.
Entering New Brunswick just before Edmunston, there is a wonderful tourist information centre where we loaded up on maps and brochures and spent quite a bit of time talking to the tourist info offices on things to see and do and directions to get there. They also phoned a couple of RV parks to see if there were any vacancies for the night (yes) with 50 AMP (No). So we came over to the provincial park to spend the night. Lots of trees so some shelter from the hot sun.
This area is experiencing a heat wave which is supposed to last for at least the next four to five days. Temperatures are in the 30's so nice and toasty. Plus, here at least in the park, it is not cooling off. Don't want to run the generator to get the air conditioning on as it is now after 10:00 pm here (we're now on Atlantic Time) so will just have to keep the fans blowing all night.
Tomorrow, we're heading to St. Leonard, Campbellton and Bathurst, where we will probably spend the night. Can't believe tomorrow is the last day of September. Now it feels like we're rushing to see and do everything.
Till next time, keep well, travel safe and god bless

Cornwall to Quebec City..August Aug 26-27
Another lazy morning before getting everything secured for travel. We left Cornwall around 10:00 a.m., or so and decided to stick to the 401 freeway since we knew, once we hit Quebec, we would have trouble with reading some road signs.
A nice drive through the rolling hills and lush green landscape. No signs of drought here, everything still looks fresh. We were navigating through Montreal (now there is a nerve racking drive) and missed a turn! Oh oh...now what; traffic moving very fast and we're heading off some other highway. We found a turn around to reverse direction but we needed to get back on the "other" freeway heading east.So went off on a side road hoping to be able to cross over the freeway and find another entrance.
We didn't really know where we were, so I jumped out of the bus to read street signs when a fire engine came down the street. So, I waved him down to ask for directions (of course he had limited English and our French is worse). After much sign language, he decided it would be easier if we followed him..bless his little French Canadian Heart!! He got us on our way in no time, thank you thank you. We would have wandered around for some time and would probably still be there.
During this drive Dale had,on one occasion, to hit the brakes, HARD, and while most things stayed put, the tea pot went flying and it was full of tea!! It broke on the counter and tea everywhere. Couldn't do anything while travelling so just left it. I did have a towel in the bottom of the sink so a lot of the tea found its way there. At least I knew what I would be doing after we got parked.
The rest of the drive went fine. We turned off at Trois Riviere to follow signs to a tourist information centre. The signs went all the way down town and then stopped and we looked and looked but never did find the place. Another very old town with very narrow streets so fun for Dale to navigate around and get us back to the freeway.
Our next stop was another small town about a further 20 km down the road to once again get to a tourist information centre. We did find this one but had to park on a main street, engine running, and run into the place to get maps etc., then a little drive around to find our way back to the freeway and we carried on.
Arriving in Quebec City, we were heading to a Prevost facility to park. Our GPS system got us 98% of the way and then said we were at our destination, while we were looking at a Costco!! So, unhooked the car and drove around and eventually found the place. Turns out this facility is the parts distribution for North American. We were given the royal tour and information to no end, plus a disc with containing a complete parts manual...Bonus, eh!! Then, with new directions, we found our way to the actual Prevost repair facility and got ourselves parked and hooked up to power.
By now it was getting dusky to decided to stay put for the night, have a light supper and get a good nights sleep.
Today, (Friday), managed to get a few things done around the bus and Dale got a couple of minor repairs done. When this was all said and done it was getting on to 4:00 so we jumped in the car and took off for the city centre. Nothing like doing this on a Friday afternoon in rush hour. The drive along the waterway was breathtaking and we found our way with no problems. After driving around a little bit to "check things out", we parked the car and toured around on foot for a short time. We were not at the citadel, but just a little further down the road.
Stopped at a small little restaurant for a bite of supper and then continued with our walk, just looking at the very old buildings and marvelling at the history that is here "if the walls could talk". By now it was getting dark so decided we had better find our way back to Prevost while we had daylight. Actually, we surprised ourselves and didn't make one wrong turn. Arrived here safe and sound and now tucked in for the night.
Still have not been able to figure out why this progam is not letting me download photos...very odd. I may just do a Picasa Web Album and if so, will let you know.

Gananoque to Cornwall, August 25th,2010
We continued on Highway 2 east out of Gananoque and for the most part were able to follow along the St. Lawrence River. Absolutlely stunning in the glorious sunshine. Through wee towns and villages; so much history here it can be overwhelming as you travel through these small places. We did stop once along the river to have a bite of lunch, just west of Morrisburg, and right on the river.
We stopped a bit earlier in Prescott and fueled the bus..cheapest price we had seen at 92.9 litre (we had checked Flying J prices on the internet and they were next best at 93.9). This was a very large fuel stop and we put on over 600 litres!! So we are now good for another 1600 Km or so, depending on how many big hills we have to pull.
We saw some for sale signs, for properites that were at least 2-3 acres in size with a nice home on the river ...asking price $129,500!!! How's that for reasonable waterfront property.
Just after we got through Morrisburg, Dale's seat started making a lot of noise, over and beyond the in house air conditioning being on. Turned everything off and the sound of escaping air grew much louder!!! We pulled over and Dale tried to locate the source; we figured it was coming out from under the driver's seat, but we couldn't locate it right away.
So, quickly off Hwy 2 and back on the 401 Freeway and we gumbooted it to Cornwall and the Flying J off exit 789. It was an air leak under the seat; Dale talked to Wayne E. and found out how to remove the seat to get at the mechanics of it underneath.
(At this time brother Tom called on Skype so turned the camera onto the road so he could see where we were travelling; may do that with others that have Skype to show what vistas we are enjoying Couldn't really talk over the noise of the escaaping air so a short "skype" visit.)
Unfortunately, neither one of us has the bendable body to get into these small areas, but we did locate the leak. Dale was able to clamp off the air from the outside, enough so we were able to get further down the road (3 km) to a truck repair facility. They were able to accomodate us right away and the necessary repairs were done..not cheaply, but done!
Now it was after 4:00 p.m., so decided to stay in Cornwall for the night. We were able to park at the truck repair place so just a matter of getting the bus out of the repair bay and backed into their yard. Quiet too so we should be able to get a decent nights sleep.
After a wee snack to tide us over, we went out for a drive. Went west down Hwy 2 to Lake Sault Parkway. This is a drive over/through approx 10 islands and is quite spectacular. The major attractions were closed so decided to drive around/through Cornwall, up and down streets just to see the city and sights before it got dark. Then found a Japanese/Thai restaurant so stopped and enjoyed a bowl of soup and an appetizer before deciding it was time to get back to the bus since it was now definitely "dark"!
Now having a quiet time, a little TV, a little Lexulous, some reading. Tomorrow our drive might last more than one hour as we are going to head to Quebec City....let's hope we don't get lost in Quebec since our knowledge of French is relgated to cereal boxes!!!
Will keep you posted...till next time....

Oakville, Belleville and Gananoque, Ontario Aug 21=23,2010
With the repairs done (we hope) to the generator, we headed out of Oakville around 12:30 ish and pointed the nose of the bus east. Decided to take the 403 to the 401 and stay on the 401 all the way to Belleville. Traffic was quite heavy and backed up near Eglington as two lanes were closed. Stop and go, but we got to do a lot of looking around as a result. So many high rises, cranes and construction everywhere, and cars, cars, cars, resulting in smog, smog, smog! Such an incredibly large city it just never seems to end.
Finally getting out of the Toronto area and the scenery changed to lush rolling "hills". Everything still quite green and looking quite fresh considering it is getting to the end of August. I imagine when the first frost hits it will be a glorious sight.
We thought we'd found an RV park just north of Belleville but on a further telephone call, turns out they have gone to permanent "seasonals" and no RV parking, but, the owner did give us directions to a Wal Mart just off the 401 which turned out to be a perfect parking spot. Lots of room on the far end and we were the tourist attraction for a few hours.
My friend and kayaking buddy, Jackie, was in Belleville visiting her family thus the reason for our stop. I was not able to make the kayak trip this year so a good opportunity to catch up with Jackie. Also, her parents had rented my house in Victoria a number of years ago when I went to New Zealand/Australia and I had not as yet met them. Her dad is recovering from a broken hip and her mom is in a care facility (alzheimer's). Didn't get to meet Agnes, but did meet Peter and the four of us went out to dinner at a waterfront restaurant called "The Boathouse". Fabulous food...again. We are getting so spoiled. Had a great visit over dinner and it turns out Dale knows Peter's brother, Ike Unger, in Vancouver. It is truly a small world and it seems like we have known each other for ever. They also had some great travel tips and suggestions of places to see and visit along the way.
After dinner, we Jackie & Peter took us for a lovely drive around Belleville and to CFB Trenton. We weren't able to see too terribly much as it was getting dark but we certainly got a feel for the size of the base. HUGE...and can see where it has a very stablizing impact on the economy of the area.
This morning, after a quick shop at the Wal Mart Supercentre, we went over to Hwy 2 to take the back roads for a few hours. This was a suggestion from Jackie & Peter so we could see more of Ontario along the St. Lawrence first hand instead of from the freeway. Good idea except for one small detail. Going through several small towns, our bus is too big/wide for the streets; especially Kingston. Wow...we took up both lanes and don't think people weret too happy with us. Couldn't be helped tho', we didn't fit in just one! Then, missed a turn so had to unhook the car and Dale had to back up the bus to do a turn around...free entertainment for the locals and the tourists!
So much history here that we, in the west, easily forget. EG: Napanee was established in 1786 and I think we saw a couple of old barns that looked like that was when they were built!!!
Our destination was Gananoque where, we were told, was the ideal place to take a cruise up the St. Lawrence. Firstly tho' we had to find a place to park the bus.
Stopped at a vacant gas station at first and lo' and behold there was a "chip truck" parked there so Dale was able to get a feed of chips (and I must confess that I had to sample some as well). Found out from the "chip lady" that there was a casino down the road so a perfect place to park.
After we got ourselves settled in, we took the car and drove down to the waterfront, got our tickets and waited for our boat to arrive for the 3:30 sailing.
It was a 3 1/2 hours cruise up the St. Lawrence, through the 1,000 islands, both on the Canadian and American sides. The sun was shining, light clouds, nice breeze, just a perfect day to be on the water. Took lots of pictures, but once again, can't download them..I'm still trying!! Its hard to believe that this massive body of water can freeze over and stop shipping for several months of the year.
The islands, even the tiny ones, have homes on them, some permanent and some summer residents. Most have electricity and phone so must be a maze of cabling under the water. Even what we would consider a rock has a house on it. Most of smaller islands have cement/rock/brick walls built up around them. Probably to save land from being eroded..and many it is apparent have been there for decades.
After leaving the boat, we came directly back to the bus. Made dinner here as we have been eating out far too much and not getting our vegetables! So tonight made Dale eat his broccoli and salad before he "was allowed" to go over to the casino.
We only went to the casino for a short while. With our ticket stub from the cruise, we got free dollars for the slots, so that, plus our personal donations, made for a short evening of entertainment. I think all the fresh air this afternoon has made us a little weary somewhat early this evening.
So now, back at the bus to relax before turning in. Heading to Cornwall tomorrow, primarily to fuel (this time confirmed the Flying J is open to the public). Not sure if we will spend time there exploring or continue on....only tomorrow will tell.
Till then, thinking of you all ... till next time

Orillia (Atherley) to Newmarket to Oakville..Aug 21-23
Saturday night we decided to stay in, BBQ some dinner, and have a quiet evening rather than making any donations to the local casino! It was also starting to rain quite heavily so an easy decision.
In the morning, after getting the wet awnings up and the bus "dumped, we left Hammock Harbour RV park in a drizzle. Cool, misty and muggy and clammy. It had rained for a good portion of the evening so lots of water/mud around,, which continued for most of the drive down the east side of Lake Simcoe.
We needed to turn off west and south) on Hwy 48, which came up rather suddenly to our left, so Dale made a quick turn and after a few KM's discovered that as we were heading east, it was the wrong Hwy 48 (we have discovered there are two Hwy 48's and two Hwy 5's). However, a short drive through the countryside and we were able to re-join Hwy 12 to eventually join the right Hwy 48. The road signage in Ontario is the pits!!
Lots of traffic, everyone starting to head home from the "cottage country", probably early because of the cool and wet weather. However, we arrived in Newmarket in good time and drove over to Glenn & Irene's. Parked on the street in front of their house and we had tea and a tour on the bus. From there we went over to Irene's to say a quick hello/goodbye to both her and Allan and thank them for their hospitality and then continued on to Oakville.
The 404 was bumper to bumper by this time (around 3:00 p.m.) so slow going until we could turn off west onto the ERT 407. This 407 is a fabulous road around Toronto and guess that because it is a fairly expensive toll road, great numbers of driver's do not use it. An easy and pleasant drive for us. It is only just over an hour from Newmarket to Oakville, so not a difficult or trying drive..just traffic!
Decided to be lazy and went over the the Mandarin Restaurent for dinner. (same chain as the one we went to in Newmarket). The food, service etc was equally as impressive as our previous experience. The specials this night were crab legs and prime rib...excellent..plus all the sushi and chinese food and desserts that you could eat. A pleasant evening back at the bus (I am playing Lexulous on Facebook with several friends and it tends to get addictive!!).
Now, Dale is outside with the YanMar diesel guy getting the work done on the generator. With some of the work already done Dale decided to not put in the new sensor/heat gauge (just continue to monitor with the "gun") and it looks like, with some repairs done, the old gauge is starting to work...???? Guess we will know for sure when everything is finished.
Still not able to add pictures, not sure what is wrong with the blog program? Will try and figure it out later. Till next time then......
Oakville, Newmarket & Orillia..Aug 16-21, 2010
Whew, can't believe I've left it for a week to catch up. Well we did leave Oakville around 9:30 Monday night and once again too the ERT Toll Road Express Way 407 which is the only way to avoid heavy traffic. As we neared Toronto, we wanted to take the off ramp to 400 N. We went off and then found out that the northbound off ramp was closed due to construction (we had seen the sign but traffic was flowing thru there regardless so we thought we were OK). What we didn't realized is that that off ramp, after you are committed, goes off into two separate directions, north and south!!
So there we were, now heading into Toronto with several thousand of our closest friends! I don't think traffic ever stops in that city. Thank heavens for the Microsoft Streets & Trips program. I had it up on the computer to monitor our progress so was able to look at the "bigger picture" and we got off on 401 East, through the north part of Toronto, and onto the Don Valley Parkway which turned into the 404 North and we were then shortly in Newmarket. For once, Dale's north and south and my right and left worked!! We arrived in Newmarket about 11:00 p.m.. and pulled into Dale's cousin's driveway; Irene and Allan were still up so had a very very short visit before we were finally able to crawl into bed.
Tuesday dawned a nice sunny, warm but NOT humid day. Very pleasant to be out and about. Dale went off to get the tires on the car rotated at Costco while I had the pleasure of catching up on the ironing, grabbing a quick nap and then visiting with Irene. That evening the four of us went out for fish and chips at the Crow's Nest Pub & Restaurant, and yes, halibut and delicious!
We had taken separate vehicles as Dale and I were heading to the medical clinic after dinner to have his foot looked at. The toothpick he managed to step on and then break off about 3/4 " into his foot, was starting to cause infection(this happened about 3 weeks ago). The Doctor on duty froze his foot and fished around with forceps but was unable to locate it, so then sent us off to emergency.
Emergency has the imediate expectation of at least 6 hours in a waiting room. We were in for a fairly pleasant surprise. The Newmarket Emergency has a "Fast Track" system and our time there including examination & x-rays was less than two hours. The doctor on duty could not locate the splinter and figured it has dissolved somewhat so now to soak it in hot water and epsom salts and a prescription for antibiotics to curb the infection, particularly as Dale is diabetic and infections can be a concern.
Wednesday, after a lazy morning, we headed off to Aurora to have lunch with Cousin Susan and on the way, stopped to try and fill the prescription. At Wa- Mart, the first place we went, we were told that the manufacture has cut back on the product and it was not available!!! So we knew we had an afternoon of running from pharmacy to pharmacy to try and get this filled. But in the meantime, we went over to Susan's and then went with her to a lovely little restaurant and a marvelous lunch.
Susan had committments later in the afternoon, so we went back to her place to pick up our car and continue the search to get the prescription filled. Shopper's in Aurora (which Susan drove by on the way to her place so we knew where it was), could not fill it in pill form, but could in liquid form for the cost of $82.00. Dale thought that was a bit high so we went to Newmarket to Costco and they were able to fill it..for $48.00!! Rather a significant difference wouldn't you say.
Back to Irene's for dinner. Her daughter Anne, Anne's son Adam and Adam's son Connor (age 3) were there as well and were staying for dinner so we once again had a good family dinner around a loaded table. Dale is in heaven with all the fresh corn and fresh peaches and other fresh fruit.
Thursday was another lazy morning (this is getting to be a habit). Dale & Allan sat outside and visited for a couple of hours and I got a few things done around the bus. In the afternoon we went and had a nice visit with Glenn & Irene Langford for a few hours, then to CAA to pick up more maps (more detailed maps) of eastern Ontario before heading back to the farm for dinner. It was clean out fridge night, just as good as the original and was followed by several games of Dominoes!!
Friday morning was spent getting things ready to travel and a few cups of tea with Irene before we hooked up and headed north to Orillia. We decided to go up the 400 up the western side of Lake Simcoe for a change of scenery. Even at that early Friday hour for travel (12:30), the traffic was, in many places, bumper to bumper and the evacuation from Toronto hadn't yet started! The good part being the drive only took about 1 hour!
We had booked a reservation at the Hammock Harbour RV Park...no 50 amps, only 30 but we can run the generator for short periods. Our main concern was a dump station and water which this place can provide. It is a lovely spot, with "fingers" coming into the resort from Lake Simcoe; quite unusual. Unfortunately, for some reason, I am not currently able to download pictures so not able to show you...next update!
As we were here early we were able to get to the grocery/liquor store and stock up before going down Hwy 12 South to Bayshore Village to meet Dick and Shirley Corner. Another old chum of Dale's from the long distant past (when they were aged 10 and younger!!!) Dale had given me the address as 28 Thicketwood so we drove up and went to the front door. "Dick" opened the door and I asked him if he would like to buy some flowers (which we had brought for Shirley). He said no, looked rather bewildered and then, when we asked it he was Dick Corner, he said no, Dick lived 2 hours down the street! Even then he didn't want to buy the flowers!!
So, down 2 houses to the right place and a great visit (and many chuckles after they found out about the wrong address and the flowers!). They live on a peninsula "finger" of land jutting out to Lake Simcoe. Wonderful spot! It was another trip down memory lane for the two of them and Dick had some pictures from that era that Dale thoroughly enjoyed. Shirley and I are wondering tho' who "Mary" from their past is and just what was up but no one was telling!!
This morning (Saturday), I was actually up fairly early and made Oatmeal/raisn/coconut/walnut cookes (with splenda!!) as Dick & Shirley were coming for coffee and to have a look at our home away from home. Needed to have something tasty to serve with coffee. They were here for about 2 hours and once again, more trips down memory lane and this time, we took more pictures.
After lunch, Dale and I headed in to find the farmer's market (which it turned out closed at 12:30) but most of the vendor's were just in the process of dismantling their booths so we were still able to make a few purchases: peaches of course, blueberries, pepperoni, potatoes, tomatoes etc.
Then into the old part of town to be tourists. They town is celebrating 50 years of hosting the Mariposa Music Festival and they have huge guitars all over the downtown. They appear to be paper mache but survive the rain/wind so have some kind of coating over them. Various artists have done them under sponsorship of local clubs. I have several pictures which I will put on the blog when it cooperates with me...later.
We spent the rest of the afternoon going into all the stores, big and little and walked/shopped for 3 hours!! A shopping record for both of us when we finally stopped for at a charming little tea house for a much needed cuppa. From there, we did a little more shopping for things we really, really needed (!!) eg: a remote operated helicopter which Dale is now playing with and then back to the bus before we got even more carried away.
Just resting, while Dale is soaking his foot and decided whether to stay in and have dinner or go down the road (5 km) to the local casino. Probably be a lot cheaper to stay home...
As mentioned, as soon as this blog works right, I'll add the pictures from the last few days...till then, keep well and be in touch soon....

Family Dinner and a Hurricane..August 15th
Sunday dawned hot and humid and clear blue skies. There was so much humidity in the air that I am sure you could have taken a bar of soap and had an outside shower without bothering to turn on any taps. Temps are in the mid 30's, but with the humidity it is in the low 40's. Ohhh, to be able to breathe!!
I spent a good portion of the morning doing laundy and making a couple of appetizers to take over to Bob & Diana's to enjoy before dinner. That, plus tidying up around the bus to get ready to travel again. Dale got the outside chores done and the car re-packed and then inside to keep cool. Just too uncomfortable to be outside for any length of time.
On the way over to Bob & Diana's we stopped at the Antique Jewellers im Jordan once again, in the hopes the price of the ring would, miracously, have come down. Nope..no such luck. So..instead of coveting that item, I bought a gold braclet instead! It is "twisted" and on one end is a dolphin's head and on the other is the dolphin's tail. It is just so unique I couldn't resist.
On to Bob & Diana's and we got a few minutes visit in and a few chores done before the rest of the family arrived. MaryJo & Marty along with Zachary, Aiden; Cailyn and Aunty Verla; followed by Trevor & Jenny with Madelaine and Connor. A house full and the kids/cousins were full to energy and just tired us out watching the kids.

MaryJo & Marty along with Zachary, Aiden; Cailyn and Aunty Verla; followed by Trevor & Jenny with Madelaine and Connor. A house full and the kids/cousins were full to energy and just tired us out watching the kids.
We had a fabulous dinner. Bob had BBQ'd a sirloin roast and had made a rub for it that was mouthwatering with hidden flavours. Aunty Verla had made an Apple pie and a Cherry Pie and Diana had made a lime/marshmellow salad (for the little kids but it was the big ones who ate it!!); scalloped potatoes with cheese and a peach cobbler. MaryJo/Marty brought a crunchy green salad and Trevor/Jenny brought fresh corn on the cob. Needless to say, once again, the table was groaning and by the end of dinner, so were we all!
All during this week of visiting, Dale had been enjoying Aunty Verla's tea, advising that this was "real tea" and not the "crap" that Arlene makes!! (first time I had heard that he didn't like my green tea!!). So Aunty Verla went out and bought him a box of Tetley Tea and we had the "passing of the tea" from Aunty Verla to Dale.
no explanations necessary!!!
It was so nice to see everyone together for our last night of visiting. We left around 9:00 ish and headed back to the bus. There was a breeze up and now that the sun had gone down, the temperatures were somewhat more tolerable. You could actually sit outside and not melt.
We watched a little TV and then I toddled off to bed around 11:00 and left Dale watching the Fox News. Around 11:50, we heard a crash of thunder and a small pattering of rain and then the sheet lightening started, one after another after another and more thunder rolling by. Then the rain came in torrents, in sheets and the wind came roaring up. It just happened..no warning and it was somewhat nerve wracking. We had no chance to get outside to get the big awning down, you didn't dare go out for fear of being hit by lightening and you would have drowned in the downpour. All we could do was sit helplessly in our tossing bus and hope for the best. The windstorm, thunder and lightning stopped and was over in about 1 1/2 hours and moved off to the north, heading to Toronto. The rains continued for a little time after that.
This morning when we got up, early, to check for damage. The wind had taken the big awning and tore one arm off totally, and twisted one end up to the bus and the canopy was full of water. Dale got a ladder and went up onto the roof to survey the damage and see what we could do to salvage the awning and put things together so we could travel. A neighbour came over to help and we got a hose up to the roof, turned water on to get a flow before turning off the tap and gravity, fortunately, took over and we were able to drain most of the water from the awning, before attempting to lower it. We spoke to several neighbours and were told that that had been a hurricane passing throught. Thank you...one experience will last me for the rest of my life!!!
It took a couple of hours, but finally got everything secured and the bus loaded, breakfast done and we hit the road around 11:30. We drove to Oakvlle, about 1 hour away, to get the generator looked at. (Dale orinally had told me Missassauga so exscuse the confusion). A few parts need to be ordered and won't be here until Thursday, should we decide to proceed with the repairs. Dale did get the fuel line/filter fixed and after running the generator for a couple of hours, it seemed to be running fine. Still need to do some repairs but it is no longer overheating...so far!
By now it was after 5:00 p.m., so no point in getting on the freeway, it would be a zoo with all the rush hour traffic. So we relaxed for a little while and then went for a nice drive thru Oakville before going off to find a restaurant to have some dinner. Wound up with fish and chips...too late we remembered that we both don't like Haddock...too soft and rather tasteless. Oh well, at least we didn't have to cook or do dishes.
We are just relaxing at the bus and will head out of here probably within the next hour, around 9:00 p.m. Sun is pretty well down so won't have that in our eyes and traffic should be light(er)!
Till next time....keep well, travel safe.

Still at Shangri-La RV..August 12-14,2010
Thursday was a bit more of a laid back day. Dale and I had a few chores to do in the morning, around the bus and a chance to have a lazy morning. The, after lunch he drove me into Jordan Station so I could have an afternoon visit with Aunty Verla, Diana and cousin Joan who joined us for the afternoon.
Joan is still working full time and had Thursday off, so only chance to have a good visit. We enjoyed several cups of tea and goodies and caught up on more family "stuff". Dale was off toddling around the neighbourhood and then dropped by about 4:30 to pick me up.
The "honey wagon" was coming, expected sometime between 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. so we wanted to sure we didn't miss them. We waited, and we waited and we waited. I went out in the car, found them only to be advised they would be over in a "few minutes. We waited, and we waited..finally had dinner at 8:00 pm., and we waited somemore!!! Then miracously, at 10:00 pm., in the dark, they showed up.
Not to go into a lot of detail but our hose is 4 inches, theirs was 2 inches...interesting challenge to the laws of gravity and suction. We kept the windows closed on that side of the bus for the night!!!!!
Friday a.m., we were up bright and early. Dale had to drive me into Grimbsy, for a pedicure appointment set for 9:00 a.m. Grimbsy is about 30 minutes from here and a beautiful drive thru the countryside. He dropped me off and Diana picked me up. We then drove to Jordan, to meet Aunty Verla for her and I to get haircuts. This obviously is a girl's day out!! From there, we drove into the village for a delightful lunch. That was followed by a walk about the village, into all the little stored, poking into the many nooks and crannies. Also got to see the house that Uncle Jack and Aunt Verla first lived in when they moved back to Ontario over 60 years ago. It is now a fabric/wool/craft shop, and all the original structure is still there.
Across the street is the Jordan Museum which Uncle Jack had a big hand in helping restore many of the artifacts and a big contributor of his time and energy.
We visited a lot of the stores but managed to resist all the tempting offerings. Back to Aunty Verla's for a much needed sit down and a good cup of tea. While we were off doing the girlie day. Dale and Bob had been off on their own as well. Bob took Dale through Andre's Winery for one thing and guess he thoroughly enjoyed that tour; plus a few other places that only guys would think is fun. Dale once again picked me up and we came back to the bus for a bit to freshen up and get ready to meet them for dinner.
We had made reservations at the Lakehouse Restaurant right on Lake Ontario. A fantastic setting; we were not able to get a patio seat, it was full (just as well as it turned out, as a big wind came up while we were enjoying our dinner inside). It is a lovely restaurant and Denise, Della and I had been taken there for lunch when we three visited a few years ago. Everything was as I remembered and the food was excellent. We three girls (Diana, Aunty Verla and I) shared a bottle of 99 Winery Merlot (Wayne Gretzkey's Estate Winery). It was delicious and will try and a get a couple of bottles to bring home with us. Will have to stash them somewhere so they last that long!!
Everything was so delicious that we were all thoroughly sated BUT somehow managed to save room for one of their desserts. The girls shared a triple chocolate mousse, Bob had the praline tart and Dale had the bread pudding. They were all particularly tasty and a fine finish to a delightful meal. We declined going back to Aunty Verla's for tea, by this time it was close to 9:00 and we were both somewhat weary. Time to get home and get the feet up and reflect on the great day we both had had.
Today, Saturday was our day to tour about on our own. We got somewhat of a late start as we both enjoyed just having our tea/coffee and puttering around the bus for a good portion of the morning. However, we eventually took ourselves off. First, back to Jordan to look at a ring I had spied, made an offer and then had to wait until later in the day to see if the consignee would accept our offer (apparently not..oh well!) Then, following some directions that left us wondering, we headed out to find a Costco. The wireless mouse/keyboard we had bought in Newmarket decided to stop working??? So, took it back and bought another one and so far so good. Of course, when you go to Costco, you never leave empty handed so we did our bit and once again the freezer/fridge are loaded.!!
After leaving there, we went for a drive, just meandering around the area to enjoy it all and at the same time, find a restaurant to have lunch.
We wound up at a wonderful little Japanese restaurant in an old house in a real old part of the town; great atmosphere and good food. Our first Japanese since we left so doubly enjoyable. On the road again, we took side roads and drove as far as Niagara on the Lake. There was some kind of festival going on and there were thousands of people and cars everywhere. No parking and it was hot. Rather than try and fight all this, we drove around for a very short time and then headed back. We stopped at Port Dalhousie for a little while as it is such a delightful little town and such a beautiful setting.
After that, it was getting on to late afternoon so drove back to Jordan to check out the ring (!!) and then consoled ourselves with very delicious ice cream cones before we came back to the bus. We are going to have a quiet evening, probably a little TV, BBQ a salmon, share a glass of wine and generally relax for the rest of the evening. Not that we are overly busy, but sometimes nice to just sit back and reflect on how fortunate we are to be able to make this trip and enjoy time with friends and family.
Till next time.....................................

Concert @ Jordan Station - August 10
....just a quickie update. Forgot to tell you that when we were at the concert, they announced that " Dale and Arlene " from Delta, BC had come the greatest distance and that it was Dale Olsen's 75th birthday. Everyone (a crowd of over 1,000) all clapped and waved. It was super!!! Made a great finish to a great Day for Dale's special day.
Beamsville & Jordan Station Aug10 & 11th,2010
Tuesday a.m. was a lazy morning. Managed to get up well ahead of Dale and put his birthday presents & card on the table so he would have a surprise waiting for him when we would come sauntering out of the bedroom searching for his coffee!! It worked...so had fun watching him opening his gifts and enjoying figuring things out.
Then had to get the cake iced and goodies together in the cooler. We were going to Aunty Verla's for lunch and leaving from there later in the afternoon to go to an outdoor concert. We managed to keep the birthday part of the lunch a surprise until well into it. Diana had invited Jimmy (brother) and wife Sandy, and their two adult children, daughter Sarah and son Tim for lunch, as well as Diana's daughter Mary Jo, and Mary Jo's daughter KayLynn( just over a year old), sons Aiden (5) and Zachary (8), along with husband Bob, Aunty Verla, and of course, Dale and I. So a goodly number to sing happy birthday, led by the two young lads.
Diana and I had connived the day before to have her pick up chicken, buns, salads etc from the deli so neither one of us had to cook and everything would be fresh for when everyone arrived. Needless to say, with that, plus Aunty Verla's sweet tomatoes and pickled beets (hmmm good), and birthday cake, we feasted royally. Had a wonderful visit with everyone, including the kids. They are so polite and so interested in talking to you. Aiden had heart surgery as a baby and was wearing a heart monitor for 24 hours so he and Dale got to compare scars and then he says (remember, this is a 5 years old) " Cousin Arlene" do you like to read books and what do you like to read?" Priceless, and genuinely interested.
After everyone left, Dale went off to find a barber and those remaining, well we just had more visiting time. We left for the park around 5:30 to get our lawn chairs parked so we would get a prime spot. First come, first served. The concert didn't start until 7:00p.m. so a bit of a wait. And it was HOT and it was HUMID and I thought Dale and I were going to expire. We had lots of cold water and umbrellas so managed to survive.
We were at the top of the slope at probably the "flattest' area with the sun to our left. As the concert progressed, with the sun going down, it was quite spectacular. The concert ended at 8:30 and we were most happy to get back to the bus and into some cool air. Not being used to it, it just seems to drain all your energy.

The concert was fantastic; "Jazz with a twist". Can't remember the singer's name, Tanya I think, a wonderful voice and kept the crowd thoroughly enthralled.

Sunsent at Lake Ontario |
Wednesday dawned as another very hot and humid day. Decided it was the day to clean up/out the bus. Had only been doing a "lick and a promise" up till now as we had both been feeling so awful. Took a few hours but once again everything is looking clean and shiny. Also, was having Bob, Diana and Aunty Verla in for a BBQ so incentive to get everything done. We didn't have any wine on board so in the afternoon went for a drive and checked out "Flat Rock Winery" just up the road. It is on the top of the escarpment so the views are just breathtaking. They can see Toronto across the lake on a clear day. Unfortunately, it was quite hazy so we didn't get to enjoy the complete views. From there we then drove into Beamsville to go to the bank and the bakery and just enjoy a drive through the wine country.
Back to the bus to get last minute things done and feet up for a few minutes. We had a great visit, and a wonderful BBQ Pork Loin (with garlic, rosemary, dijon mustard crust); garlic rosemaryskewered new potatoes, raisin/walnut/pineapple coleslaw, sweet tomatoes, fresh peaches and cream corn on the cob, buns and for dessert, homemade blackberry pie with whipped cream and of course, a cup of tea. We all ate heartily and enjoyed every morsel. Diana and I called cousin Denise in Cranbrook to let her know what she was missing so we had a good laugh with her.
Everyone left around 9:45 p.m., so then had some quiet time to get the galley organized and tidied up. Didn't dry the dishes tho', just stacked them and figured they could dry naturally over night. It was a humid night so we wound up having to turn the air conditioner on in the bedroom. The slight buzzing sound it makes, makes it hard for me to sleep, plus the dry air makes me cough. A restless night for me, but fortunately, it didn't bother Dale so he managed to get a pretty good nights rest.
Today, Thursday, was overcast earlier but the sun is doing it's best to come out. With the bit of rain we had overnight, it will definitely be another hot and humid day. Must say we are both looking forward to getting out of Ontario and into some "normal" air. We are told tho' that these temps/weather is more typical for July than August, just an unusual weather pattern for this area, this year.
Dale still hasn't found the parts for the generator. The YanMar dealers he has talked to either don't stock parts or they sell only to a certain market and won't get parts..has been most frustrating. Has found another couple of dealers within striking distance so will call them today. We don't have good cell service here so have to go out of the park and down the road to make calls. Otherwise we keep dropping them. Well, that's pretty well things up to date. Hope you all are enjoying the Blog..will write again soon.

Newmarket to Beamsville: Aug 8-9, 2010
Did a quick stop at Chapter's to pick up the book "Excel for dummies" and then back to the bus for lunch. In the later afternoon we picked up Irene and did a drive/tour of Aurora, another of Dale's very old stomping grounds. Aurora is a very pretty town with multitudes of flowers and well kept gardens; it has quite a charming "aura" about it. An old town with an old history and it shows in the well maintained homes. I would say it is a proud little community.
We had a fairly early evening as I guess the humidity was once again getting the best of Dale and I. We couldn't turn on the air conditioning as we were/are still worried about the generator so had a bit of a restless evening; thank goodness it cooled a little towards morning.
We left Newmarket around 11:30 a.m.; took the 400 freeway to the new 407 toll highway which bypasses everything, to the QEW and onto our park just south of Jordan Station, where Aunt Verla lives. The 407 records your license and regardless where you live, it will send a bill. Somehow they are linked to everything across the country. Apparently it is quite expensive as well but since the car is in the company name, guess they will get the bill...ah geeze eh!!
The only happening on our journey here is that when you join the 407 to go either east or west, it does not designate what cities are in either direction. We were wanting to go east but as it turns out (after we had gone east for quite a few kilometers) that we really should have gone west, then south, then east. At least we did get to see more scenery and admire the new freeway!
The park we are in "Shangri-La Niagara Family Campground" is the only park in the area that we could find that had 50 AMP and even at that, they only have 3 sites with 50 AMP. Power and water at the site but no sewer. The "honey wagon" comes by a couple of times a week to pump you out so must make sure we are home on the right days and times.
Once we got hooked up we both enjoyed very long hot showers and then went off to visit with Bob & Diana. Made a wrong turn somewhere so asked for directions and that person sent us off in the wrong direction again. Eventually we got there and were able to have a short visit with them before they were off to a grandson's soccer game. Diana said they were doing a progressive dinner. Dinner with them, and then we stopped at Aunt Verla's for tea and dessert. Jimmy & Sandy and son Tim came in so got a nice visit in with them as well. Will see them again in a day or two.
Home again and now just relaxing. Innocently baked a cake saying it was for lunch at Aunty Verla's tomorrow but in reality it is a 75th birthday cake for Dale. We are hoping to have a small surprise lunch at Aunty Verla's ... will see how it goes..
Till next time

On the Move a little Aug 4-7
Somewhat quiet the last couple of days in Pefferlaw. I did go out Thursday a.m., and after a bit of searching, found a camground that we could get into to discharge our black and gray tanks for the fee of $20.00!! We really didn't have any choice as our next RV stop won't be until this Monday afternoon and we are getting very full. Did let the campground owner know that I thought this was usuary and they should be ashamed. Asked for a receipt as I thought be darned it that $20.00 was going into their pocket. That, plus I am writing to Tourism Ontario to complain.
After finding that place, went into Sutton to get some fresh fruit and did a little tour, on my own, to look at a few places that I knew Dale would not be interest in. Did not succumb to any 2nd hand/antique stores, looked, drooled on occasion, but did not buy.
Thursday a.m., as well, Dale got in touch with an old chum from 65 years ago and we agreed to meet for dinner in Sutton. They were on their way to the Sutton Fair Tractor pull, and sorta half way for both of us. He didn't tell his wife that was what they were doing or who they were meeting. We got there first, and then Glenn & Irene walked in. Glenn sat down and Irene looked at him like he was nuts..like who are these people and then she recognized Dale. A good laugh and a great visit and dinner to. We'll meet up with them again when we come back thru this way later this month for a little longer visit.
Friday a.m., we packed up and drove the whole 50 km to Newmarket and are parked at Dale's 2nd cousin's farm, which is now actually on the edge of the city of Newmarket, it has grown so much. No hookups or anything, but we can manage for the three days we'll be here. (they have actually sold the farm to a developer but have two more years remaining that they can live here).
Today, Irene's younger sister, Eleanor, and two of her sons (Murray and Steve) came for a visit and for dinner so Irene, Eleanor and Dale have spent the past few hours reminiscing about "the olden days" and "remember when" and "who did what to whom"...Lots of good memories and lots of good laughs. It has been interesting being on the sidelines.....We had a good old fashioned farm dinner with everyone contributing. I made two blackberry pies and cooked a small prime rib. Eleanor brought a ham, three pies (rhubarb, apple and cherry), coconut macaroons, butter tarts and a gooseberry tart while Irene provided cole slaw, potatoe salad, sweet Ontario tomatoes, tea and coffee. Enough food for us plus probably twenty others. A very nice day for all.
Weather wise it has been quite a bit cooler. Still beautiful sunny days, but the temperatures are down by at least 10 degrees, with a nice breeze so very pleasant. Such a drastic change from earlier in the week.
Have Skype working now so anyone who is on Skype can reach us for a video or phone call. Nice to see everyone in person when we talk.
That's it for now. Here in Newmarket until Monday and then plan on heading to Beamsville area. Till next time....

Pefferlaw: August 1-4
We are still in Pefferlaw at the Riverview Campground and it is HOT and it is HUMID!!
Thank goodness the air conditioning on the bus is working A-1 as we have it on just about 24 hours to get some relief. When you go outside, you just melt, especially, as we are, not used to it. We just had a horrendous downpour go thru for about 20 minutes and now that the sun has come back out, it is a steam bath out there. Walked out to take out the garbage and came back drenched from the humidity.
We have not done very many exiciting things over the past few days. Still feeling no energy as a result of these colds. We did yesterday however, go into Newmarket (50 KM SW of here) which was a beautiful drive thru the green rolling hills; to go the medical clinic. Good news: we'll live!! Bad News: it may take a few more days.
Dale has an ear pain/ache; sinus congestion/nose and cough. I was worried he would develop pneumonia but his chest is clear. Got some meds for him and then I was diagnosed as having Bronchitis, so meds for me as well. We started on them last night and hope that in the next 36-48 hours we will start feeling some relief. The humid air does not help me and was also prescribed an Inhaler to use every 4-6 hours or so. Does help the breathing somewhat.
On the way to Newmarket we did take a few side roads towards Lake Simcoe and found some beautiful little parks and beaches and nooks and crannies that, if we get time, will go back to and have a picnic, all being well. Newmarket itself is a good size city and the "old town" is very pretty. Actually took some pictures this time and will take more when we go there on our next travel stop. After we filled our prescriptons at Costco, went to a chinese restaurant for dinner before heading home.
We went to a place call "Mandarin". It is a chinese buffet and absolutely out of this world. Ambience, service, food, layout..cannot say enough positive things about it. We were very impressed. And the best part, 20% off for seniors!!!! Highly recommend it for anyone in the Newmarket area.
On Saturday and Sunday past, we did go into Sutton (8 km west)to have a look around and go for a drive each day. Another charmingly small and old Ontario town. This one is somewhat larger than Pefferlaw (which has a post office, liquor store, convenience store, garage, one or two other businesses and that is it)and does boast a laundromat which we put to good use on Sunday. That, plus a place that serves the best fish and chips that we have had in a good long time.
Today has been a relatively quiet day which I have spent being quite lazy. Dale is off in the car (either that or he has been kidnapped and the car has been stolen). He went outside and the next thing is he disappeared. Just getting a few little chores done around the bus and getting a bit of reading in.
So, until next time, keep smiling!
